IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir says Israeli troops prevented a potentially larger attack this morning after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire near Hebron in the southern West Bank, wounding five Israelis, including two critically.

According to a preliminary military investigation, the attackers, both from Hebron, had apparently intended to target Israeli civilians along Route 35. However, after encountering a temporary military checkpoint at approximately 7:30 a.m., they allegedly changed their plans and opened fire on soldiers from nearby positions. The exchange lasted more than 20 minutes before Israeli officers maneuvered around the gunmen and killed them. An M16 rifle, a pistol, and a substantial amount of additional ammunition were recovered.

Zamir praised the soldiers' response, saying their actions prevented further casualties. He also instructed the military to prepare reinforcements for Central Command if necessary. The IDF says it had received no specific warning ahead of the shooting. Israeli security authorities are now examining whether the attackers operated independently or received assistance, funding, or instructions from a larger terrorist organization.
