A 14-year-old student injured in today's deadly explosion in northern Israel told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that another student had been handling the unexploded munition and unscrewed part of it shortly before it detonated.
Eitan Masouri, who was struck by shrapnel in the neck, spoke to Netanyahu during the prime minister's visit to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.
"We stopped to eat, and one of the students noticed it had a threaded part. He unscrewed it, and then it exploded," Masouri recounted.
He described students being thrown backward by the explosion, with some landing in nearby bushes. Despite bleeding from his neck, Masouri said he attempted to help a friend who had suffered injuries to his head and leg.
Following the visit, Netanyahu instructed officials to strengthen public warnings about the dangers of unexploded ordnance and expand searches for additional munitions.
Education Minister Yoav Kisch, who also visited the hospital, announced that school field trips near the northern border and northern Golan would be suspended for 48 hours, with scheduled trips redirected to alternative routes.
Kisch said the original hike had received all necessary approvals, including clearance for the route, but that safety procedures would now be reviewed following the explosion.
