UPDATE: Hezbollah Cluster Munition Believed Responsible for Deadly Explosion During School Hike

The IDF now believes that the unexploded ordnance responsible for today's deadly explosion on Ramim Ridge was a submunition from a Hezbollah rocket fired into northern Israel during the war.

According to a preliminary investigation, one of the students apparently picked up the unexploded submunition while hiking along the Naftali Mountains Forest scenic route and placed it in his backpack. Several minutes later, it detonated.

During the fighting, Hezbollah fired Grad rockets carrying dozens of BRB1-type submunitions into northern Israel. These rockets scatter small explosive devices across wide areas, some of which fail to detonate on impact and can remain dangerous long afterward.

The explosion killed a 15-year-old boy and injured 19 others, including two seriously and three moderately.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, including the precise origin of the munition.
