BNN WEEKEND RECAP | October 9-10: Riyadh Airport
By Sammy Tisser,
A missile attack attributed to the Houthis struck Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport Saturday, a diplomatic source told AFP. A hospital source reported dozens wounded, including five in intensive care. Passengers were evacuated and flights canceled or diverted. Saudi authorities had not confirmed the details in that report.
"I saw injured in front of my eyes. Everyone was running," a witness told AFP.
Yemen Fighting
The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed 136 Houthi military targets Friday night as fighting continued between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces. The coalition said it was working to "destroy the ballistic missile network" of the group. AP could not independently verify its target count. Houthi media reported four strikes on Sanaa airport Saturday and attributed them to Saudi Arabia.
FlyDubai Investigation
UAE prosecutors said the accused co-pilot planned to crash Flight FZ1073 into a terminal at Ben Gurion Airport in an attack inspired by 9/11. Investigators said he studied the route during previous flights and passed employment screening.
"None of the procedures revealed any indications of his extremist views," the attorney general said. The findings form part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
Iran Diplomacy
The Kremlin said Putin conveyed "the Iranian side's views on a possible resolution to the conflict" to Trump during a Friday call. It did not disclose Iran's proposals or Trump's response. Separately, journalist Ben Caspit reported that Washington encouraged Israel to strike Iran independently ahead of the US midterms. That account has not been officially confirmed.
Gaza Strikes
Palestinian health officials reported at least five people killed in two Israeli strikes Saturday. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted militants but provided no further details in the Reuters report. Separately, the IDF and Shin Bet announced the killing of two people they said participated in the October 7 attack.
Lebanon Flights
Lebanon announced Saturday that Washington lifted decades-old restrictions on flights between the countries. The US decision was signed September 30. Further regulatory, security and operational arrangements are required before direct services can resume.
