New details have emerged in the investigation into the attempted attack aboard FlyDubai flight FZ1073
By Sammy Tisser,
New details have emerged in the investigation into the attempted attack aboard FlyDubai flight FZ1073. Israeli Shin Bet investigators have traveled to the UAE and are now participating directly in the interrogation of the Omani co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami. He reportedly told investigators that he acted in "revenge for Gaza" and wanted to die as a "martyr."
Investigators reportedly believe the attack was planned well in advance. Al-Hammami reportedly told interrogators that he searched for airlines operating flights to Tel Aviv and sought employment with FlyDubai for that purpose. He is also believed to have considered carrying out an attack on an earlier flight to Israel before ultimately abandoning that attempt. Reports indicate that Ben Gurion Airport was his intended target, with a U.S. military base in Jordan considered as a potential backup target.
The investigation is continuing into whether al-Hammami acted alone or had assistance from a terrorist organization or foreign state. Other members of the FlyDubai crew have been questioned, and investigators reportedly do not currently believe they were involved. Authorities are also examining the suspect's phone, overseas travel and contacts for possible evidence of recruitment or outside direction. No conclusive link to Iran has been established at this stage.
