Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel believes the flydubai copilot who allegedly stabbed the other pilot was trying to crash the aircraft, which was carrying mostly Israeli passengers.
"This morning there was an extremely serious security incident," Netanyahu said, adding that "almost all of the passengers on the flight were Israelis."
According to Netanyahu, as the plane approached Israel, one pilot allegedly stabbed the other and then tried to damage the aircraft's systems. He said an Israeli passenger and a crew member managed to force their way into the cockpit and stop him, while another crew member entered and stabilized the plane.
Netanyahu said Saudi authorities are now interrogating the suspect, while Israel remains in "continuous contact" with the relevant authorities to ensure the passengers' safety and return home.
He also "saluted the heroes" who intervened, saying they "saved many lives," showed "great bravery," and "prevented a serious tragedy."
