President Donald Trump told Axios on Thursday he is approaching a decision on whether to resume large-scale attacks on Iran in an effort to bring the war to an end.
"I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them \[the Iranian regime\] or do I not? It's a big decision. Anything could happen with me," Trump said.
Axios noted that Trump has made similar threats before. His remarks come ahead of a planned meeting Tuesday with leaders from six Gulf countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to the outlet.
Reuters reported that Trump told reporters Wednesday he hoped the war was nearing its end and said Iran wanted an agreement. He said Washington had heard that directly from Tehran, without explaining the contact. "They want to make a deal. We'll see how that works out," he said.
Axios says Tuesday's talks are expected to cover U.S. postwar proposals, with a broader plan expected to be finalized after the midterms.
