The U.S. military says it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday after Iran attempted to strike a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles.
The tankers were targeted in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island, home to Iran's key oil export hub. The U.S. says the crews were evacuated before the vessels were struck.
A short time later, Iran retaliated, launching missiles toward U.S. targets in Jordan. Iranian state media reported a wave of missiles targeting two U.S. bases in the country.
