Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella authorized the resumption of coal exports to Israel

By Bernard Moerdler,

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella authorized the resumption of coal exports to Israel, reversing restrictions imposed under former President Gustavo Petro, the Colombian government announced. Trade Minister Mauricio Gómez Amín said the government had issued a decree authorizing the exports. Petro suspended coal shipments to Israel in 2024 over the war in Gaza, and his administration imposed a total export ban in 2025.

"I again authorized coal exports to Israel, ending the vetoes and ideological restrictions of the past," De la Espriella said. He said the restrictions had harmed Colombia's economy, undermined legal certainty and weakened international confidence in the country. Colombia's National Federation of Coal Producers said the restrictions eliminated about 3.5 million metric tons in annual shipments to Israel, valued at approximately $200 million.
