Hackers affiliated with Iran's government shut down a small British electricity generator for four days in late July, The Telegraph reported Saturday. The newspaper said it was believed to be the first successful Iran-linked cyberattack to shut down a British energy facility. A British government spokesperson told the newspaper that the incident affected a small-scale generator and never posed a risk to the wider energy system. Officials did not identify the facility, citing national security concerns.
The Telegraph said the incident coincided with cyberattacks on U.S. water infrastructure across 12 states. The British government has since briefed energy company chief executives on measures to protect their facilities, according to the newspaper.
