Israel says overnight strikes on a Syrian military airbase were carried out after Damascus allegedly moved

By Sammy Tisser,

Israel says overnight strikes on a Syrian military airbase were carried out after Damascus allegedly moved toward allowing Turkish forces to establish a presence at the site near Aleppo.

The Prime Minister's Office said Israel had repeatedly warned Syria against such a deployment, arguing that it would threaten Israeli security and break the existing security status quo between the two countries.

After those warnings were allegedly ignored, Israel struck the airfield and said it would act against attempts to alter the security situation. Jerusalem added that it would support a return to the previous status quo.

Turkey, however, has denied that it was planning to station forces at the base.
