Iran seized an Emirati oil tanker near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz

By Bernard Moerdler,

Iran seized an Emirati oil tanker near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the semi official Fars news agency said moments ago. Fars, which reflects Revolutionary Guards positions, said the Guards stopped the vessel because it declined to use the northern route Iran has designated and did not pay the service fees Tehran has imposed on transiting ships.

Iran has set out conditions for passage through the waterway that include use of the Iranian route, payment of service fees and Iranian permission. Fars said maritime navigation data showed the tanker was halted while passing through the strait.

BNN was not able to independently verify the account. No Emirati authority has commented, and Fars did not name the vessel or its operator.
