Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz say they directed an operation to destroy Hezbollah's underground tunnel network in the Beaufort area of southern Lebanon, where approximately 700 tons of explosives were used.
The joint statement describes the underground complex as a central part of Hezbollah's planned invasion of communities in the Galilee, saying the operation was part of Israel's ongoing campaign to dismantle the terror group's infrastructure in southern Lebanon. It was carried out following what the two leaders called Hezbollah's "blatant violation" of the ceasefire agreement.
"The State of Israel will not accept any violation of the ceasefire agreement," the statement says. It warns that any attempt by Hezbollah to target Israeli civilians or Israeli forces "will be met with a harsh and powerful response" that will exact "a heavy price" from the terror organization.
The statement adds that Israeli forces will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon and continue destroying terror infrastructure to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its capabilities.
