The U.S. Embassy in Amman has issued a security alert urging American citizens in Jordan to take precautions, saying Iran has attacked civilian and critical infrastructure across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, diplomatic facilities and other civilian locations.
The embassy, which has been on ordered departure status since March 2, said it is rescheduling some routine consular appointments out of caution given the continuing regional tensions. It urged U.S. citizens to monitor information from the Jordanian government about specific threats and to follow all instructions, including sirens and other warnings.
The embassy advised Americans to consult Jordan's National Center for Security and Crisis Management for public safety guidelines, including explanations of the country's emergency sirens, and to avoid all demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with a heavy police presence. It said citizens should monitor local media, follow the instructions of local authorities, exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the United States, and keep a low profile. Travelers whose flights are affected should contact their airline directly.
