Hamas announces that Khalil al-Hayya has been chosen as the terror group's new leader following its internal elections, formally replacing the leadership council that has overseen the organization since Yahya Sinwar was killed two years ago.
Al-Hayya, who previously headed Hamas's political bureau in Gaza and served on the five-member council, was also the group's chief negotiator in ceasefire and hostage release talks during the war that followed the October 7, 2023, massacre. A native of the Gaza Strip, he spent most of his life there before relocating to Qatar shortly before the October 7 attack, where he has remained based.
