President Trump declared the Strait of Hormuz open and said it would remain so "with or without Iran," announcing that the United States was reinstating what he called an "Iranian blockade" aimed solely at preventing Iranian ships and customers from entering or leaving the waterway. All other countries would have "fair and open use of the Strait," Trump said.
Trump said the United States would from now on be known as "the Guardian of the Hormuz Strait" and, in what he called a matter of fairness, would be reimbursed at a rate of 20 percent on all cargo shipped through the strait to cover the cost of providing security there. "The process and formation will begin immediately," he said.
