Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is unlikely to attend the burial of his father, Ali Khamenei, in Mashhad today, after the Revolutionary Guards advised him against it over concerns he could be targeted, CNN reported. Only family members are expected to attend the burial at the Imam Reza shrine, according to Iranian state media.
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since the February 28 strike that killed his father and several family members at the start of the war, and has issued only written statements, with no images, video, or audio released. Sources in Tehran say he is recovering from injuries sustained in the strike and that security services are limiting his exposure. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said last week that the new supreme leader was marked for death. The burial concludes a week of processions through Tehran, Qom, and the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
