US President Donald Trump said he does not expect the latest escalation with Iran to develop into a prolonged conflict, insisting, "I don't think it's going to start again. I think it's going to go very quickly."
Speaking after the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said the US responded forcefully after attacks on commercial vessels. "They hit a couple of ships, and so we hit them much harder," he said, adding that the US is "not looking for long term" and that "anything that happens is going to be over very quickly, and we'll only make it safer, including for oil."
Despite saying US negotiators remain in contact with Iran, Trump appeared to question whether a new agreement is even necessary. "I'm not sure I want to make a deal. Let's just finish the job," he said.
On Turkey, Trump indicated he is leaning toward allowing the country back into the US-led F-35 fighter jet program, while noting no final decision has been made. "I haven't totally made up my mind, but my inclination is to say... he's helped us in so many different ways," Trump said of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that although Erdogan "doesn't like Israel," he stayed out of the war with Iran after Trump asked him to.
