Iranian state television reported that a liquefied natural gas tanker was struck near the Strait of Hormuz after allegedly ignoring warnings, but stopped short of officially claiming responsibility for the attack.
According to reports from Axios and the Wall Street Journal, Iran's Revolutionary Guards fired at least two missiles at commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway overnight. A US official told Axios that two ships sustained significant damage, though no casualties were reported.
Earlier, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said a tanker traveling southbound roughly 15 kilometers east of Limah, Oman, was struck by an unidentified projectile on its port side, sparking a fire. The Wall Street Journal identified one of the vessels as the Al Rekayyat, an LNG tanker owned and managed by Qatar's Nakilat, reporting it was hit near the top of its engine room while sailing through the Gulf of Oman at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident comes days after indirect US-Iran negotiations ended without any public breakthrough toward a longer-term agreement, despite a 60-day ceasefire that had been intended to provide room for diplomatic efforts following the conflict sparked by US and Israeli strikes.
