President Donald Trump said he plans to issue a statement imminently confirming that the United States has agreed to a deal with Iran, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, adding that the agreement would be signed electronically by himself or Vice President JD Vance. Trump said the deal would include an Iranian commitment not to obtain nuclear weapons and an immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and that Iran would not be given cash, though sanctions could potentially be lifted depending on its conduct. Trump said he was in no rush to remove Iran's nuclear material, saying it could be handled over the next month or two and calling it "harmless." Iran has not confirmed it would agree to the deal.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes a deal with Iran and has pushed for a return to fighting, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal. The report said Israeli officials were taken by surprise by Trump's social media post calling for no further Israeli attacks in Lebanon, and that Netanyahu has expressed concerns about the terms of a potential deal. Trump, in the same interview, said Netanyahu was supportive of the agreement, stating "Bibi is OK with it."
