Senior Israeli officials said there has been real progress in recent hours toward signing the memorandum

By Bernard Moerdler,

Senior Israeli officials said there has been real progress in recent hours toward signing the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, under Qatari and Pakistani mediation. The officials said that following the past day's escalation and the Israeli strike in Beirut's Dahieh district, the Trump administration was linking the signing to reducing the risk of further escalation through Iranian fire toward Israel. According to the officials, the U.S. aim is to offer Iran concessions, possibly money or economic benefits, or an immediate rather than gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, in exchange for signing the memorandum and holding its fire.
