President Donald Trump said the United States was striking Iran "as we speak" in response to the downing of a U.S. helicopter, in a phone call with ABC News as Central Command announced the operation. "I think it's very important to respond. They shot down a helicopter, and we are responding as we speak," Trump said, adding, "This is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that's what this one is."
Trump updated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the strikes, in a call between the two following the downing of the helicopter, according to sources.
