U.S. Central Command has begun launching strikes against Iran at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, CENTCOM said, in what it called a proportional response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter a day earlier. The command said the strikes were carried out at President Donald Trump's direction and described them as self-defense strikes responding to "unjustified Iranian aggression."
Explosions are being reported in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and other parts of Hormozgan province in southern Iran, and air defenses were said to have been activated in parts of Tehran, according to Iranian social media accounts.
