U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran shot down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz and said the United States would respond. "I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz. There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
U.S. Central Command said the AH-64 Apache went down near the coast of Oman on Monday evening while patrolling regional waters, and that both crew members were rescued within about two hours and are in stable condition. CENTCOM said the cause of the incident is under investigation and has not described it as a shootdown. A senior U.S. official told Channel 12 that an investigation had determined an Iranian drone struck the helicopter, without yet establishing whether the strike was intentional. Iran has not claimed responsibility, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency.
