BREAKING: Forty-four years after Golani soldiers first seized Beaufort Castle from PLO fighters in one of the opening battles of the First Lebanon War, Israeli troops have returned, raising the Israeli and Golani Brigade flags over the ancient fortress in southern Lebanon.
Defense Minister Israel Katz marked the moment, saying forces "returned to the summit of Beaufort and once again raised the Israeli flag and the Golani flag there" on the memorial day for the Peace for the Galilee War, the same conflict in which six Israeli soldiers died taking the castle in 1982, along with dozens of Palestinian fighters.
The IDF held the site throughout its 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon before withdrawing in 2000. Katz called the latest raid a tribute to "the Golani soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Beaufort," with the brigade now leading the operation that recaptured it.
