US-Iran exchanges intensify as Kuwait comes under attack
American forces struck a military installation near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran overnight Wednesday-Thursday, targeting what officials described as a site threatening US personnel and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The US military also shot down several Iranian drones during the operation. Iranian media reported three explosions east of the port city around 1:30am local time, with air defenses briefly activated while authorities investigated.
Iran's IRGC responded hours later, saying it struck the American base that had launched the attack. The statement, carried by state broadcaster IRIB, gave the time of the retaliatory strike as 4:50am local time but did not identify the base's location. Kuwait's military then announced it was actively engaging incoming missiles and drones, suggesting the American facility in question may be on Kuwaiti soil.
Separately, Iranian forces fired warning shots at four vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without coordinating with Iranian security authorities. IRIB said the ships turned back after ignoring initial warnings. The incident occurred around 12:35am local time, roughly an hour before the US strikes near Bandar Abbas.
The flare-up comes as negotiations to end a conflict now in its third month remain ongoing. The war, which began February 28 with joint US-Israeli strikes, has killed thousands and pushed global energy prices sharply higher. Trump declared earlier this week that a 60-day ceasefire extension was nearly finalized, though Monday also saw US strikes that Iran condemned as a truce violation. Trump separately rejected an Iranian report that Iran and Oman would jointly oversee Hormuz shipping, stating the waterway would stay open.
