At a White House cabinet meeting where ministers took turns updating President Trump and praising him, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that some progress had been made in talks with Iran, though he offered little in the way of specifics. "We'll see over the next few hours and days whether progress could be made," he said, adding that while the administration prefers a diplomatic resolution to the nuclear question, other options remain available. Addressing Trump directly, Rubio declared that Iran's leadership would never obtain a nuclear weapon "as long as you're president of the United States."
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, meanwhile, acknowledged that Iran still possesses missiles following weeks of US-Israeli strikes, but argued that Tehran's capacity to produce new ones has been effectively neutralized. "They may have missiles, but they can't build more right now," he said, extending that claim to drones and naval vessels as well. Hegseth credited a US blockade of Iranian ports with cutting off the country's economic lifeline through tanker seizures worldwide, and suggested the combined pressure had driven Tehran to the negotiating table.
