Israel is on heightened alert tonight after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly mused about restarting airstrikes on Iran and signaled he is poised to reject Tehran's latest proposal, saying the Iranians have "not yet paid a big enough price." Channel 12 reported, citing sources, that Israel is preparing for several scenarios Washington may choose to respond to Iran. The Kan public broadcaster cited sources saying Israel is also on alert for a possible escalation on the northern front. Other Israeli outlets described a "state of maximum alert" as the IDF tracks an apparent uptick in U.S. military air activity across the region.
The proposal in question is a 14-point Iranian plan delivered through Pakistani mediators that envisions reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. naval blockade up front, with a separate nuclear track to follow. Trump told reporters before flying out of Florida earlier today that he had been briefed on "the concept of the deal" but added, "I can't imagine that it would be acceptable." He also warned that "if they do something bad, there is a possibility" airstrikes could resume. A senior Iranian military official said over the weekend that renewed conflict with the United States is "likely," and the IRGC said it remains on "full standby" for a return to hostilities.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today canceled a full security cabinet session in favor of a smaller meeting with select ministers and senior security officials. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that the United States is "suffocating" Iran's leadership through what he called an economic blockade running alongside the military offensive. "We are suffocating the regime, and they are not able to pay their soldiers. This is a real economic blockade, and it is in all parts of government, all hands on deck," Bessent said, referring to the Treasury's "Operation Economic Fury" supplementing the Pentagon's "Operation Epic Fury."
