U.S. President Donald Trump said today that Iran is "dying" to make a deal but cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, while praising the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as "amazing." "Iran is dying to make a deal, I can tell you that. But it cannot have a nuclear weapon," Trump said. On the blockade he added that "the siege at Hormuz is amazing. Iran is not making any money from oil."
CNN reported, citing sources, that the Trump team intends to expand the blockade on Iranian ports, including a long-term closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and that the president's currently preferred strategy is to inflict the maximum possible economic pressure on Tehran. The remarks come hours after Trump told reporters at the White House that "we might need" to restart the war with Iran, and as the Israeli political establishment is bracing for the possibility that U.S.-Iran talks could collapse as early as next week.
