Senior Israeli officials have warned their American counterparts that Israel will be unable to maintain its current measured response if Hezbollah continues attacking IDF soldiers, two sources familiar with the discussions told the Jerusalem Post. The warning comes as the U.S. has continued pressing Israel to restrain its response even as Hezbollah's attacks have expanded from IDF troops in southern Lebanon to rocket and drone fire targeting northern Israel.
Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "It must be understood that Hezbollah's violations are, in practice, dismantling the ceasefire." Netanyahu pledged to "vigorously" target the group, adding that Israel was acting in coordination with the United States and "incidentally, also with Lebanon." He said Israel retains "freedom of action not only to respond to attacks, which is obvious, but also to pre-empt immediate threats and even emerging threats." Hezbollah rejected the accusations, saying its operations were "a legitimate response to the enemy's persistent violations of the ceasefire" and vowing to continue responding to what it called Israel's violations and occupation of southern Lebanon.
