U.S. President Donald Trump said tonight that Iran submitted an improved proposal to Washington after he canceled a planned trip to Pakistan, but that the new offer still falls short of what is required for a deal. Asked whether he intends to continue the ceasefire, Trump said he had "not even thought about it."
"You probably heard that we canceled the trip," Trump said. "We have all the cards. We're not going to spend 15 hours in airplanes all the time, going back and forth, to be given a document that was not good enough. So we'll deal by telephone, and they can call us any time they want."
On the question of who Washington is now negotiating with, Trump said: "I'll deal with whoever runs the show. They don't know. They are fighting with each other. In many cases I think they're fighting not to be the leader, because we knocked out two levels of leaders. If they want, they can call me. We have all the cards. We won everything." Pressed on his comment to Reuters yesterday that the United States is "dealing with who is in charge now," Trump said nothing had changed, only that "they gave us a paper that should have been better. And interestingly, immediately when I canceled it, within 10 minutes we got a new paper that was much better."
