U.S. President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday that the United States will hold off on striking Iran and extend the existing ceasefire to give Tehran time to produce what he called a "unified proposal." In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump said the decision came at the request of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who are mediating between Washington and Tehran.
"Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so, and upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," Trump said. He said he had directed the U.S. military to maintain the naval blockade and "in all other respects, remain ready and able," and that the ceasefire would be extended "until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other."
The announcement came hours before the two-week ceasefire was due to expire on Wednesday and as Iranian state television denied that any Iranian delegation had traveled to Islamabad for a second round of talks.
