The United States has completed its military withdrawal from Syria after a decade-long presence, with the last American troops departing the Qasrak base in northeastern Hasakah province on Thursday. The base, the largest and last remaining U.S. facility in the country, was handed over to the Syrian army's 60th Division, composed primarily of Kurdish fighters formerly affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces.
U.S. troops and equipment exited Syria via Jordan rather than through Iraq in order to avoid potential attacks by Iranian-backed paramilitaries. The handover followed a meeting between Syria's Deputy Defense Minister Sipan Hamo and U.S. force commanders in Hasakah.
The withdrawal was carried out in phases beginning in February 2026, starting with the al-Tanf garrison near the Iraq-Jordan border, followed by the al-Shaddadi base in southern Hasakah and the Kharab al-Jir airfield near Rmelan in March. At its peak, around 1,000 U.S. troops were deployed across northeastern Syria as part of the anti-ISIS coalition. The drawdown accelerated after the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa agreed to assume primary responsibility for combating ISIS within its borders.
