A source in the Saudi royal family told Israel's N12 on Monday that Riyadh believes there is no solution short of a U.S. ground entry into Iran, but stressed that any such move must be accompanied by a viable governing alternative. The source said the war so far "has not achieved its results" and that Iran "has become more aggressive toward us, toward you, and toward the United States and its interests in the region and the world."
The source said the Iranian regime should be treated like Saddam Hussein's, urging the U.S. to replicate the 2003 model of regime removal, but with a credible, secular replacement acceptable to the Iranian public. He said the alternative should not necessarily be Reza Pahlavi, but someone with broad support "across all segments of the street in Tehran, Isfahan, and the other provinces, even in conservative Mashhad."
The source described the Iranian regime as more dangerous than Saddam's, noting that Iraq abandoned its nuclear program in 1981, while Iran openly pursues uranium enrichment. "This is a certain future threat to the entire world," he said.
Despite the sharp language, the source was careful to define the limits of Saudi involvement. "Saudi Arabia did not start this war and did not participate in it," he said. "If we are exposed to Iranian aggression, every incident will have its own response. But as of this moment we have not made a decision to enter this war."
