According to The New York Times, a complex U.S. rescue mission inside Iran required the destruction of multiple aircraft after complications on the ground. Two transport planes that had entered the country to extract a downed airman and accompanying commandos became stranded and were ultimately destroyed by U.S. forces to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands.
The report says additional aircraft were deployed into Iran to complete the extraction, as hundreds of special operations troops were involved in the mission.
