BREAKING: Two downed U.S. airmen have been rescued from inside Iran, US President Donald Trump says, describing the mission as "one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History."
He says the injured navigator had been stranded in "the treacherous mountains of Iran" as enemy forces closed in, but is now "SAFE and SOUND!" adding that "at my direction, the U.S. Military sent dozens of aircraft... to retrieve him." Trump also confirms the pilot of the F-15E Strike Eagle was rescued a day earlier.
"This is the first time in military memory that two U.S. Pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in Enemy Territory," he says, adding the missions were completed "without a SINGLE American killed, or even wounded."
According to Axios, the navigator was extracted by a specialized commando unit under heavy air cover, with U.S. forces carrying out strikes as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps moved to capture him. Both crew members had made contact with U.S. forces after going down.
