According to Israeli military officials, a proposal to create a buffer "security zone" in southern Lebanon is being finalized and is expected to be presented to the political leadership for approval. The plan, coordinated with legal authorities, would involve establishing forward army positions several kilometers inside Lebanese territory while dismantling infrastructure tied to Hezbollah in villages near the border.
As part of the approach, Defense Minister Israel Katz has indicated that buildings along the front line of these villages would be demolished, and civilians would not be permitted to return to areas south of the Litani River until the Hezbollah threat is addressed. Military officials say many of these areas were already cleared during the late 2024 ground offensive, though troops continue uncovering weapons and infrastructure, some predating the war and others set up during the 2024-2026 ceasefire.
The IDF says the goal is to significantly weaken Hezbollah and reduce risks to residents in northern Israel, while acknowledging that fully disarming the group during the current phase is not realistic. Officials note that most rocket fire originates from north of the Litani River, though short-range launches are now largely directed at Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon.
Despite this, the military reiterates that disarming Hezbollah remains a long-term objective. In a statement, the IDF says ongoing efforts are intended to steadily advance that goal over time, while Israel Katz emphasized that Israel remains committed to achieving it through both military and political means.
