After Iranian missile fire damaged three private planes at Ben Gurion Airport, new restrictions have been imposed on outbound flights to the United States. Effective immediately and expected to remain in place through at least Saturday evening, flights are now capped at around 130 passengers each, far below the typical capacity of aircraft like El Al's Dreamliners.
Due to the sharp reduction, many passengers will not be able to travel as planned and are expected to receive cancellation notices. Travelers are advised to closely monitor their email, WhatsApp, and SMS for updates. Similar limits in the past led to significant congestion and confusion at the airport, and similar scenes are likely in the coming days.
El Al confirmed the change, saying, "Following a directive from the Home Front Command... about half of the passengers currently booked on these flights are expected to receive cancellation notifications," after the cap was reduced "to approximately 130 passengers per flight." The airline also stated it is "currently suspending the assignment of additional passengers to flights to the United States."
"Passengers whose flights are canceled will be eligible for a full refund or a voucher," El Al said, adding, "no changes are currently expected to flights from the United States to Israel." The airline noted, "We apologize for the inconvenience caused... and continue to work closely with the relevant authorities," and said it is prepared to adjust operations if guidelines change.
