Early reports indicate an attack at Temple Israel, though authorities stress the situation remains fluid. Michael Bouchard, sheriff of Oakland County, says there are no confirmed casualties at this time, except potentially the suspect. He describes the incident: synagogue security "saw the suspected attacker approaching and they engaged the threat." Bouchard adds that "a vehicle was involved" and "shots were fired," noting that "nobody at the moment has been confirmed to be hurt except potentially the shooter." He emphasizes it is "too early to determine the suspect's motivation."
Children present at the synagogue were safely relocated to the Jewish Community Center for reunification with their parents.
Michigan's governor, Gretchen Whitmer, condemned the attack as "heartbreaking," stating: "Michigan's Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am hoping for everyone's safety." She added that her office is working with state police to obtain further information.
National and international Jewish security groups are also responding. The Secure Community Network says it is coordinating with law enforcement and community partners. The international unit of ZAKA reports that "there are casualties at the scene," though this has not been officially confirmed. The Anti-Defamation League Michigan urges the public to avoid the area.
At the federal level, Kash Patel, director of the FBI, says personnel are responding to an "apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation."
State authorities are also on site. The Michigan State Police confirmed an "active shooting incident" and advised: "We are asking for community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response." Troopers are increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district. Officials continue to report no confirmed information on casualties.
