A missile struck Italy's Camp Singara military base at Erbil International Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan overnight, the Italian Defense Ministry confirmed. All approximately 300 Italian soldiers stationed at the base were safely sheltered in bunkers, with no casualties or injuries reported. This is the second time the base has come under fire during the conflict, with Camp Paterna, an adjacent facility, struck in the opening days of the war.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the attack "unacceptable," adding that it remains unclear whether the missile was fired directly from Iran or by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. "We do not know if the attack was directed specifically at the Italians or at the international compound as a whole," Tajani said. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has been in constant contact with military commanders since the strike. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been briefed.
Italy maintains its presence in Erbil under Operation Prima Parthica, with troops training Kurdish Peshmerga forces. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been a major target of Iranian strikes throughout the conflict, with the U.S. presence and armed Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operating in the area drawing sustained fire.
