Israel's government is set to extend the home front emergency status for an additional two weeks through March 26, just one week before Passover. The extension requires approval from the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Defense Ministry officials stressed that the extension does not necessarily mean the war will continue until that date, but rather preserves the authority to maintain emergency measures as needed. Easing of restrictions could come within days.
The Home Front Command has already extended current restrictions, including the closure of all schools and kindergartens nationwide, through this Saturday night. A new phased reopening plan from the Education Ministry may follow. The emergency declaration grants the Home Front Command broad authority to instruct the public on shelter requirements, restrict education, and issue directives for the protection of life and property.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated today: "We are in a fateful war. It will continue for a long time." He warned Hezbollah that it "is paying and will continue to pay a heavy price for joining the campaign."
The Defense Ministry acknowledged in its explanatory notes that the economic impact of the nationwide emergency cannot yet be assessed, stating there is "difficulty in estimating the economic consequences on the economy."
