U.S. intelligence has intercepted encrypted communications believed to have originated in Iran that may serve as an activation signal for sleeper operatives abroad, according to a federal government alert sent to law enforcement agencies. The transmission was relayed across multiple countries shortly after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and appeared destined for recipients possessing a specific encryption key, consistent with instructions to covert operatives outside conventional internet or cellular networks.
The alert states that "the sudden appearance of a new station with international rebroadcast characteristics warrants heightened situational awareness," though it notes there is no confirmed operational threat tied to a specific location. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to increase monitoring of suspicious radio-frequency activity.
The warning follows a series of suspected incidents in the United States and Europe since the start of the conflict, including an attempted bombing in New York City and a mass shooting in Austin, Texas on March 1. German security officials have separately warned of potential attacks by Iranian-linked sleeper cells following a fatwa calling for holy war against the United States and Israel to avenge Khamenei's death.
