Iran has officially named Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the killed Supreme Leader, as Iran's new leader, Tasnim News Agency reports. Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, confirmed the selection, stating the Assembly of Experts chose Mojtaba Khamenei "from among the prominent figures" despite what he described as threats from President Trump to bomb the council session.
Larijani called on Iranians to unite behind the new Supreme Leader, saying he is "capable of leading the country during these sensitive circumstances." The selection came after Israel struck the Assembly of Experts building in Qom while members were counting ballots, and Trump warned that any new leader who did not receive U.S. approval "is not going to last long."
The appointment of Khamenei's son signals that hardliners remain firmly in control of the regime. Mojtaba Khamenei built significant influence within Iran's security forces and business networks under his father's rule. He now assumes leadership of a country under sustained military assault, with Israel claiming near-total air superiority over Iranian skies and strikes continuing across the country.
