By Meir,

This evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement about the two soldiers who fell in combat early Sunday morning (translated from Hebrew):

"My wife and I, together with all the citizens of Israel, share in the heavy grief and extend our condolences to the families of two combat engineering soldiers, Staff Sergeant Maher Khatar and another soldier whose name has not yet been cleared for publication, who fell in battle in southern Lebanon.

Maher, z"l, a brave warrior from the Druze community, served as an example and inspiration to the youth of the village of Majdal Shams who enlist in the ranks of the IDF-a trend that has been growing in recent years, which is an expression of the eternal covenant between us.

Maher, z"l, and the additional soldier who fell fought with heroism to protect our communities and our citizens against the terrorist organization Hezbollah.

We bow our heads in mourning for their fall and are committed to defending our northern border against any threat.

May their memory be blessed and eternally cherished."
