Iran has indicated that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the killed Supreme Leader, will be named as his successor, Reuters reports. "The name of Khamenei will continue," said Ayatollah Hosseinali Eshkevari, a member of the Assembly of Experts, in a video published in Iranian media. "The vote has been cast and will be announced soon," he added without further details. The formal announcement is expected from the council's secretary, Hosseini Bushehri.
Mojtaba Khamenei built significant influence within Iran's security forces and vast business networks under his father, and sources told Reuters last week he was the clear favorite. His selection would signal that hardliners remain firmly in control of the regime despite the disruption caused by the ongoing military campaign.
President Trump responded by saying Washington should have a say in the selection. "If he doesn't get approval from us he's not going to last long," Trump told ABC News.
Separately, Israel confirmed it killed Abolqasem Babaian, the recently appointed head of the military office of the Supreme Leader, in a strike on Saturday, continuing to target senior figures in the regime's chain of command even as Iran moves to formalize new leadership.
