Two IDF soldiers fell in combat early Sunday morning in a Hezbollah attack in southern Lebanon, according to a statement from the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. One of the soldiers has been identified as Sgt. First Class Maher Khatar, 38, a heavy machinery operator from Majdal Shams who served in the 91st "Galilee" Regional Division. The name of the second soldier has not yet been released.
A preliminary IDF investigation says the incident happened during operations near the border, across from the Israeli community of Manara. A Puma armored personnel carrier became stuck amid operations in the area, with the IDF sending in another Puma APC and two D9 armored bulldozers in to pull it out. While they were working to recover the vehicle, a projectile believed to be either an anti-tank missile or a mortar hit one of the D9 armored bulldozers at the scene. The impact caused a fire that killed the two soldiers. One officer was also lightly wounded in the attack.
