NATO air and missile defense systems in the Eastern Mediterranean have intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile headed toward Turkish airspace, the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed. The missile was fired from Iran and crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being engaged. Debris from the interceptor fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province, with no casualties or injuries reported.
This marks the first time Iran has fired a ballistic missile at a NATO member state. Turkey's Foreign Minister called his Iranian counterpart to formally protest the launch, Reuters reports.
The Turkish Defense Ministry warned all parties to avoid actions that could spread the conflict further in the region, stating Turkey reserves the right to respond to any hostile action against its territory. Turkey said it will continue consultations with NATO and other allies, adding that every measure to defend its territory and airspace will be taken "with determination and without hesitation."
