Over 60 flights to and from Cyprus have been cancelled this week after a drone reportedly struck the UK's RAF Akrotiri base near Limassol. EasyJet and British Airways were among the airlines affected, with operations to Larnaca and Paphos airports disrupted.
EasyJet confirmed three return flights between Cyprus and the UK were cancelled on Monday as a precaution, while flights on subsequent days are currently running as planned. Passengers are advised to check flight trackers for updates. The airline is offering rebooking, refunds, and accommodation for affected travelers.
British Airways also cancelled a Larnaca flight today, stating it is monitoring the situation closely and prioritizing passenger safety.
No injuries were reported at the base, but non-essential staff are being temporarily relocated and three British schools on the island have been closed. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson emphasized that the safety of personnel and their families remains the top priority, and that operations continue as normal.
The cancellations come amid broader regional disruptions, with hundreds of other flights cancelled in the Middle East and Dubai Airport closed for a third day. As many as 94,000 UK travelers are reported stranded abroad, prompting Foreign Office support and repatriation efforts.
