Earlier today, U.K
By Meir,
Earlier today, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer set out Britain's position on the Iran crisis, making clear that the U.K. was not involved in the initial strikes on Iran and will not take part in any offensive action. He stressed that with around 200,000 British citizens currently in the region, the government's first duty is to protect them, alongside their service personnel and diplomatic staff. He also called for the British citizens in the area to register their presence with the British Government and to follow all Foreign Office travel advice.
Starmer also explained that British jets were already in the sky, intercepting Iranian strikes as part of strictly defensive operations to shield Gulf partners and U.K. military interests. He confirmed that the U.S. had requested permission to use British bases to destroy Iranian missile launchers, and that the U.K. has agreed to this, limiting use to defensive purposes in order to neutralise threats before they can cause further harm.
To reinforce the air defences of the U.K's partners, the Prime Minister also revealed that Ukrainian experts are being brought in to help Gulf states shoot down Iranian drones, drawing on experience from the war in Ukraine. He ended off the statement with "This is the British Government, protecting British interests, and British lives."
