The third round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva has concluded for the day amid significant gaps between the two sides.
Sources familiar with the negotiations said gaps remain large and the situation "does not look great." White House envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were reportedly disappointed by what the Iranians presented in the morning session.
In a notable shift, Witkoff held a direct face-to-face meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the talks, marking the first direct contact after previous rounds were conducted entirely through Omani mediation.
The Iranian proposal does not include transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium outside the country, a key U.S. demand. Tehran also demanded the lifting of U.S. sanctions and the cancellation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Despite the apparent impasse, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi struck a more optimistic tone. "We have finished the day after significant progress in the negotiation between the United States and Iran," he said. "We will resume soon after consultation in the respective capitals. Discussions on a technical level will take place next week in Vienna."
